It Was Never Just a Dog… And That’s Why I Wrote This Book

If you’ve been reading The Barking Blogger for any length of time, you’ve probably met Odie.

You’ve laughed at his antics, smiled at his stubborn dachshund personality, and maybe even shed a tear or two as I’ve shared pieces of the journey we walked together.

The truth is, Odie was never just a dog.

He was my shadow. My comfort. My teacher. My best friend.

When he died, I discovered something I wasn’t prepared for. The grief was overwhelming, but even harder than the grief itself was feeling like I had to explain it.

“You can always get another dog.”

“It was just a dog.”

“At least he lived a long life.”

Those words weren’t meant to be hurtful, but they reminded me of something many dog lovers know all too well: the world doesn’t always understand the depth of the bond we share with our dogs.

That’s why I wrote It Was Never Just a Dog.

I didn’t write it because I had all the answers.

I wrote it because I needed someone to tell me that what I was feeling was normal.

That loving a dog that deeply wasn’t something to apologize for.

That grief is simply love with nowhere to go.

Inside these pages you’ll certainly meet Odie, but this book isn’t really about him.

It’s about your dog.

The Labrador who greeted you every afternoon.

The senior rescue who finally learned what love felt like.

The little Chihuahua who ruled your house.

The Great Dane who thought he was a lap dog.

The puppy who stayed far too short a time.

The old friend whose paw prints still seem to echo through your home.

Readers have shared something beautiful with me since the book was released. Many have told me they expected a story about losing a dog but instead found themselves remembering spouses, parents, siblings, friends, and every loved one they have ever lost.

Because grief doesn’t care whether someone walked on two legs or four.

Love is love.

Whether you’re grieving today, remembering a dog from years ago, or simply celebrating the incredible gift dogs bring into our lives, I hope these pages remind you that you are not alone.

If you’ve ever looked at an empty leash and cried…

If you’ve ever reached for a dog who wasn’t there…

If you’ve ever whispered, “I miss you,” long after everyone else expected you to move on…

This book was written for you.

Thank you for walking this journey with me through The Barking Blogger. Your encouragement, your stories, and your own beloved dogs inspired every chapter.

I hope It Was Never Just a Dog brings you the same comfort that writing it brought me.

Because in the end…

It was never just a dog.

It was family.

It was unconditional love.

It was a piece of your heart.

And it always will be.
