The holidays are stressful… even for your dog!
Can you believe it? Only 8 days until Christmas! Packages are late, presents still need wrapping, the grocery list is growing, the menu isn’t planned, and those final decorations are waiting. Oh, and there are still three more Christmas parties to attend! Yikes! It’s enough to make anyone want to hide under a blanket with some eggnog.
Don’t get me wrong—I absolutely LOVE Christmas. It’s such a beautiful time of year, especially as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, my savior. But let’s face it, the season can also feel like a whirlwind of to-dos, deadlines, and wallet-emptying moments. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, and while we know how it affects us, did you know the holidays can also stress out your furry family members?
It’s true! Dogs are incredibly in tune with our emotions. When we’re frazzled, they pick up on it—and it can leave them feeling anxious too. You might wonder, “How can a dog who sleeps most of the day possibly feel stressed?” But our pups are like emotional sponges. They sense our tension and can respond in ways that might surprise you.
Some dogs cope by doing quirky things, like “chasing” their tails—spinning in circles and biting at them as if chasing their stress away. Others might withdraw, lose their appetite, or show changes in mood or behavior. Left unchecked, their stress can even lead to physical symptoms, like tummy troubles or increased aggression.
But here’s the good news: You can help your dog feel calmer—and the best part? These stress-relief tips work for you, too!
- Take a break for a nice, long walk together.
- Turn on some calming music (or even Christmas carols!).
- Ditch the screens and spend some quality playtime with a favorite toy.
- Cuddle up under a cozy blanket and remind your pup just how loved they are.
These simple steps can do wonders for both you and your furry friend, making the holidays a lot less stressful and way more joyful.
From my pack to yours, Merry Christmas! Let’s make it a season of love, peace, and wagging tails.
