Greyfriars Bobby: A Love That Never Left

If there was ever a picture of loyalty, it’s this.

Greyfriars Bobby was a small dog with a mighty heart. The devoted companion of John Gray, a nightwatchman for the Edinburgh Police in the 1800s, Bobby’s story has touched generations. When John passed away in 1856, Bobby—only two years old—refused to leave his master’s side. He spent the next 14 years guarding John’s grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard, a quiet cemetery in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

The townspeople saw to Bobby’s needs, feeding him and offering shelter. In 1867, Sir William Chambers, then Lord Provost of Edinburgh and a director of the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, paid for Bobby’s license and gave him a collar—a gesture of honor and love. That very collar is still on display today in the Museum of Edinburgh.

Though some debate surrounds what breed Bobby actually was—some say Skye Terrier, others believe he was a Dandie Dinmont or even a Cairn Terrier—one thing remains certain: Bobby was a dog. And that was more than enough. Because dogs love in a way that is absolute, selfless, and without condition.

A statue now stands at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row, just opposite Greyfriars Kirkyard. His headstone reads:
“Greyfriars Bobby – Died 14 January 1872 – Aged 16 years – Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all.”

Whether you believe he was a Skye or a Dandie, his story is not about his breed—it’s about his bond. A dog’s love is often quiet but unwavering. And when they lose their person, they feel it deeply. Experts agree that dogs grieve. They mourn. And they deserve the chance to say goodbye. When they don’t, when their human simply disappears, we may never know the confusion or sadness they carry. Some may even feel they did something wrong.

Greyfriars Bobby reminds us of the depth of a dog’s heart. His story is not just about loss—it’s about presence, loyalty, and the unspoken promise a dog makes when they choose you: “I’m yours. Always.”

Let Bobby’s devotion inspire us to love like that—and to remember, our dogs feel more than we’ll ever know.
