Dog – A God Send?

Have you ever wondered how, out of all the animals on this earth, it was the dog that became man’s best friend? Not the horse, not the cat, not the bird in the sky—but the dog.

It’s funny—not the laugh-out-loud kind of funny, but the kind that makes you pause and think. Somehow, this four-legged, wet-nosed creature grew into so much more than a pet. They became our confidante, our therapist, our comforter, our loyal shadow.

I’ve had dogs in my life every single day since I was five years old. Over time, I’ve come to realize it wasn’t an accident that dogs found their way to us. It wasn’t random. It was part of a divine plan. I think God knew that we would need them.

Humans are complicated. We strive to impress. We push ourselves to get ahead. We work endlessly to protect ourselves, not only physically but emotionally. We carry burdens that weigh us down, and we often take ourselves far too seriously. We analyze and overanalyze every decision, every mistake, every what-if. And the irony is, the more we strive, the more we stress. The harder we try to manage life, the more life manages us.

We are, in so many ways, our own worst enemy. Very few of us have that elusive “off switch.” Very few of us know how to just let go, even for a moment, to find rest and comfort.

The Secret Switch

But some of us have discovered a secret—that our “off switch” doesn’t come from within at all. It comes in the form of a dog.

Think about it: that moment when you walk through the door, and your dog greets you as if you’ve been gone a lifetime. Their tail wagging so hard their whole body wiggles. Their eyes lit up, focused only on you—the person their heart is tethered to. In that instant, the world stops. Stress falls away. All that exists is pure, uncomplicated joy.

I believe God knew we would need this. He knew we’d stumble under the weight of our own worries. He knew we’d forget how to rest. And so, in His wisdom, He sent us dogs.

Dogs are more than companions. They are reminders. They remind us that no matter how chaotic life gets, there is always someone waiting to bring us back to center. They remind us that loyalty doesn’t waver, that love doesn’t have conditions, that joy doesn’t have to be complicated.

I think about the secrets I’ve whispered into furry ears, the tears I’ve buried in a dog’s coat, the laughter that spilled out as a pup chased his own tail. Dogs are woven into the fabric of my life, into the parts of my heart that words can barely reach.

They are the friend who listens without judgment. The guardian who would stand between you and harm. The soul who doesn’t care about your flaws, your failures, or how your hair looks on a bad day. To them, you are already enough. More than enough. You are their person, their world, their forever.

Every day, I thank God not only for the gift of dogs but also for giving me a heart big enough to love them back with the same devotion. Because that is another gift dogs give us—they teach us how to love better. More simply. More freely. More completely.

I believe dogs are a kind of heaven on earth. A living reminder that, despite the chaos and heartbreak of this world, love is still here. Faithfulness is still here. Joy is still here. And sometimes, all of that is wrapped up in fur and paws and a wagging tail.

I hope you have that treasure in your life. And if you do, I hope you never take it for granted. Because a dog is never “just a dog.” A dog is a God send.
