The snow they warned us about has finally arrived. Winter weather alerts can be so uncertain—sometimes they’re just a cautious “maybe,” and other times they’re an urgent call to brace yourself and stock up on bread and milk. But today, the weatherman got it right. Snow is here.
As I sit here at my computer, watching the snowflakes drift down outside, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude. My house is quiet again, just me and my pack, each of them nestled in their favorite spots around the living room. After a long, challenging week—no power, 10 dogs, and living like a mole in the dark—it feels good to find a moment of calm. I know how lucky I am.
Our little county is finding its rhythm again. Slowly but surely, businesses are reopening, and life is resuming, thanks to the hundreds of linemen who came to our rescue. Like modern-day cavalry, they showed up when we needed them most, and for that, I am so thankful.
Still, my heart feels heavy as I scroll through my Facebook feed. The videos and images of the devastating fires in Los Angeles and the ongoing rebuilding in North Carolina are heartbreaking. It’s hard to comprehend the magnitude of loss when entire neighborhoods are reduced to ashes. For many, a home isn’t just a structure—it’s a keeper of memories, a safe space where life’s joys and sorrows are woven into its walls. To lose that is unimaginable.
So many families, pets, and wild creatures have been displaced, their lives forever altered. The scale of the destruction is staggering. Yet amidst the heartbreak, there’s a quiet beauty in the relentless effort of those working tirelessly to help—firefighters, linemen, rescue workers, and volunteers. These are the true heroes. They deserve our admiration and gratitude. They remind us of the best in humanity.
To everyone affected by the fires in Los Angeles and the rebuilding efforts in North Carolina, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I may be miles away, but you’re not forgotten. My heart is with you as you navigate this incredibly difficult time.
